Haggis Road Trip!

Written by

Easter weekend the Flamingos travelled with 15 able players, one reserve, one injured and one really old guy, to Salt Lake City to challenge the Park City Haggis Club.  A seven hour drive the night before the match proved a good decision.  A beautiful day surrounded by the snow capped mountains was the backdrop for a first time meeting of these two clubs.

Play commenced with hotly contested open play for the first 20 minutes with the Haggis finally opening scoring with a wing try.  The NoCo forwards took it to the heavier Park City forwards with good counterucking and defensive play.  The Flamingo heavies assembled a pushover maul from 10 meters out.  The conversion was successful.  The backs were little help due to the fact that they had not played together and the scrum half/fly half connection was repeatedly interupted by aggressive Haggis forward play.  Play in the first half found the Haggis in the try zone more than Northern Colorado clearly needed.  NoCo 7-Haggis 22

The second half was not successful at all for the men in pink.  The lack of mainstay players and reserves contributed heavily to a lackluster performance.  The Flamingos did not score in the  half with the Haggis scoring 7 tries and one conversion.  The match ended Haggis 57-NoCo 7.

Recent Army transplant from Germany, JJ Schaffer and Jalon Morton are worthy of mention for spirited play and great tackling.

It is noted that the coaching staff is looking forward to a rematch in Northern Colorado in three weeks time.  Practice and better attendance at the match will be definite factors.  Onward Flamingos!

No Co Flamingos Spring Opener

Written by

The Flamingos opened the spring segment of their season with a home match against division leader Denver Harlequins.  The opener for the day was an entertaining match between the Colorado Senior Old Boys and the Fort Collins Old Boys.  There were just enough players to field two teams, including some 'not so old boys' from Red Rock Community College.  The coach from Red Rocks brought his players with him much to the appreciation of all the Old Boys that played.  The Fort Collins men prevailed with 5 tries for and one try against.  The referee for the match appreciated the spirited and clean play of all.

The temper of the feature match was set when lock,'Too Tall Zach "Gilligan" Stienbach put a form tackle on his opposite number after reception of the opening kick.  The match was temporarily halted to make sure the man was able to continue.  He was not.  Ensuing play continued with the same intensity.  The NoCo boys played mostly in the Quins end for the next 5 minutes until flyhalf Mike 'Bird' Staab intercepted a ball in loose play and put 'Gilligan' Stienbach away with an excellent pass at the Quins 22 to open the scoring with a 5 pointer.  The conversion attempt failed.  NoCo 5-Quins 0.

The Denver squad was not to be denied and made many attempts in the next 10 minutes to find the try zone and finally succeeded in a weak side score from a scrum.  Conversion failed.  Score was even at 5-5.

The local crowd watched the see-saw battle continue with play again commencing mostly in the Denver end of the field.  A number of penalties committed by the Harlequins finally resulted in a successful penalty goal by 'Bird' Staab from approximately 55 meters away at the 27 minute mark.  Flamingos 8-Quins 5.  Play continued through the half with no further scoring.

The second half was a highly contested with both clubs making forays into each others red zone with no scoring success.  The local club committed three consecutive penalties near their own goal with the Quins finally taking advantage with a try at the 68 minute mark in play, with no conversion.  Quins 10-NoCo 8.  With the opposition go-ahead score the Flamingos urgently went to work and spent the next few minutes in the opponent's end.  Kye Mascarena found himself in the try zone for a score after numerous attempts by the local team.  Again, the conversion failed.... Flamingos 13-Quins 10.

Not to be denied, the Harlequins fought back with a penalty goal at the 35 minute mark after Flamingo flanker Gabe, don't know his last name, was awarded a yellow card for playing the man withouth the ball.  Tied ball game at 13.  INTENSE play ensued to the last with the Denver side scoring on a lineout and rolling maul play from about 10 meters from the NoCo goal.  The match ended with the Flamingos on the short end of the score, 13-18.

A second side match was played thanks to the Red Rocks players again and Fort Collins Old Boys.  Thank you, again fellas!

At the post match festivities, Gabe and Jalon were mentioned as notable players with Mitch getting the nod for Flamingo man of the match.
